Gina and I were deeply saddened today when we heard of the passing of our Life Long Friend Deren Cook. In 1992 Deren was ONE of FOUR WO1's that rounded out the unit at Fort Rucker to Test and Evaluate the OH-58D KW. I was lucky enough to be a part of the selection process and be the initial mentor for the 4 Warrant Officer's fresh out of Flight School. It was clear to me that Deren, Travis, Keith and Chris were head and shoulders above all the other applicants for the KW Program. Many fond memories of Deren and his family accompany us on Skiing trip to Lake Jackson and Eufaula. On one ski trip, Russ Kruse CW4 (ret) pulled me an Deren up both on Solom Ski's behind a Jet SKI?? What fun that was.
My next occurrence working with Deren was in 2006 when I returned to active duty. Deren gave me my final check ride to validate me again as an MTP. Flying with Daren that day was like being back on Lake Jackson, splashing water in each other's faces and seeing who could out corner, out fly and one up the other. I will deeply miss my friend.

Deren and I were "stick buddies" in flight school, meaning we learned to fly together, study together, blow off steam together and graduate together. We continued to serve together in the same units and would cross paths when assigned to different units. Deren was always a friend, always could be counted on and will be dearly missed. Till we meet again in Fiddler's Green. Godspeed. Scouts Out!

Just heard about Deren through a mutual friend. So sorry. I was a CW3 and Deren was my WO1 copilot when he graduated flight school for the Comanche Early Operational Capabilities test. I retired from active duty and work as an instructor at Fort Rucker and last saw Deren when he came through the Instrument Examiner’s course. He was always a hard working professional, team player, and got along with everyone. I pray for peace and comfort for his family during this time as I know he will surely be missed. (Psalm 23)

Deren was a quiet professional. He was a hard worker and a great maintenance officer. I was lucky enough to go to flight school with him and then serve at Ft. Rucker and Ft. Bragg with him. He loved his kids and took care of business! I was lucky to know him! He will certainly be missed! Travis Wallace

We remember all the birthdays, holidays and camping times our families spent together, when our families were young. Deren is so lovable and loving, caring for everyone. Oh, how he will be missed by his Mom, brother and sister and families, his daughters and especially his grandchildren, his extended family. Deren smile always meant, "We shall over come" and This to shall pass". He will always be remembered and loved.

Deren, what a guy. No better son, dad, brother father, or friend can ever top him.
From tiny to present, he cared and helped everyone. All his military years away, he would do everything possible to keep in touch even from south Korea or Bosnia or Iraq. Never ended a call without saying I love you and if in person, give a big hug and in any uneasy happening, assure me it will be okay.
This tiny baby that came into my life, grabbed my heart and never ever has let me down
These past days when it was just he and I out in the wood lot, splitting and hauling wood, will forever be in my heart that my boy and I could just pick up from way back when and worked in sync and due to the noise of the splitter, just a nod or a smile we got it done. He always thought I shouldn't be doing the heavy work but with him to talk with, it wasn't hard at all.
Now when I look through the many pictures of him, I think on all the achievements from school sports, the many hours on the road to soccer or swim meets, and topics of conversation that came up. The military events I watched as he kept moving on up.
Now my precious one, go rest high on that mountain, your work on earth is done. Never doubt that your legacy and life you lived wont be carried on by your family. Nobody can fill your shoes, but your example of life gives us something to strive for.
In my heart a memory forever. Enjoy your dad again, I'm sure he met you up there
Love mom

To Deren’s family and friends,
So very sorry for your loss. He was one of my pilots at MedEvac in Wausau. We shared a lot of calls, meals, and stories. Hit the snowmobile trails a few times. He will be missed. ❤️

Deren has been a mentor, confidant, and friend for the past 20 years. He is one of the nicest men that I have ever met. His easy going personality was the Yen to my Yang when we were deployed together in 2008/09. Deren was patient with me when he didn’t have to be and taught me things that I still use in my life today. I routinely think about our time working together recently in Rhinelander and wish that time could have been longer. His impact on this world will be felt for generations.
See you on the Green my friend,
Cary Howard

We are truly heartbroken for the loss of such a great friend ! Who we cherished like a brother we’ve know Deren for over 30 years and spent many holidays with and Birthdays watched our children grow up together went Thur many ups and downs in life together ! It never failed where ever the military took us it always brought our paths back together ! Our memories are many with Deren all starting way back to flight school . From camping to boating ,bbqs , hiking to home improvements to working on vehicles and celebrations throwing darts pool and many campfires where Kim and Deren could solve all the world problems with a campfire and just a few beers !! Deren’s only fear was snakes- ya better move or you just might be pushed in the water - true story !! Deren was easy going and loved life and lived it to the fullest! Soft spoken kind hearted worked hard and played even harder ! He loved his family the most and always talked about going back home he wanted to get back to Wisconsin to be closer to all of them to go Hunting with Jeff again go boating with them and fishing ! So glad he made that move back home with Jeanie by his side ! His girls were his everything and Jeanie ! When he would talk about them you could hear in his voice the love he truly was happy ! Deren you will forever be missed and the memories we will hold close and cherished ! You will never be forgotten! Sending lots of love , hugs , and prayers to all of the Cook family. Fly high Deren ! We love you ! Love Kim and Nancy Barney and family !

Great memory of Deren Jeane, Christy and myself snowmobiling all day across Black Lake, NY.
He said he'd go slow for Christy and I on our Two up. Ya, right! We had a great time.
