Marty and I both grew up in Tomahawk, WI, but we didn’t really know each other until after we were both at the University of Wisconsin. We actually didn’t meet until I became his housemate of “mutual convenience” my senior year of college. My previous housemate graduated a semester before me which left me with no place to live. Searching on a “housing needed” campus bulletin board I saw Marty’s post which indicated he was from Tomahawk and was looking for a short term housemate. I moved in to his, just outside the belt line, apartment and spent a semester with Marty. We had a great six months sharing a house! He always had a “goofy”smile on his face, and we had a good time whenever we weren’t studying or working our part time jobs. A funny story - an attractive young woman moved into our building, and we tried to be friendly and helpful to her, which was our nature. She had a young (5 or 6 years old?) daughter and Marty befriended her, even sometimes being asked to babysit the little girl. Marty, always a nice guy, was willing to help out. Three months later the woman and her daughter moved out quickly without explanation. We didn’t think more of it until about 3 weeks later we saw a legal notice in the Wisconsin State Journal indicating that the young woman had been arrested for prostitution!!?? We looked at each other and Marty said, “well that’s why I was asked to baby sit at strange times?” I regret Marty and I didn’t stay in better touch after college, but I am proud to have been a friend and see that he served out country in the Air Force for 33 years! RIP my friend!

After hearing the news of your passing I heard your laugh and saw your smile. Memories of so many family gatherings, especially all the Christmas family dinners on Christmas Eve. in Tomahawk. Time so precious it goes by too fast. It has been so long since talking to you and seeing you. After living in the Madison area for so long then returning to Tomahawk then as if you were gone, so many family members who lost out on you when you were alive living in your hometown. That makes me cry. Your illness and it taking you so young makes me cry. I missed you, we all did. We were both in the Air Force, that was cool, what you did with fighter planes and how long you served, THANK YOU Airman. I love you Uncle Marty.
