Church, whether in Tomahawk,Wisconsin or 8000 miles overseas and no matter the denominations, are to raise our tendencies by daily examination of our conscience, the most important exercise of our spiritual life.In fact, many Churches use such wording as descriptive overtones to describe their religious foundations.
I wonder, many times during the global crisis we're all facing, if we are all not literally,on purpose,knowingly.. distancing our aquaintences, our morals, our character from one another due in part because we've lacked the motivational 'oompha' to even do the basics for ourselves.
When i had heard that Deacon Darrell was called upon to Eternal Life memory flashes of my father and Darrell instantly came to mind.I was born in Milwaukee and first met this gentleman subsequent to an house fire as an youngster.
I wont go into great depth about that night, but will say he left an lasting impression on myself about life,in general.
It wouldnt be until the mid- 1990s i then came across Mr.Smerz when i strolled into service at St.Mary's one weekend.I didnt speak with him that day...but for some reason, myself being an Protestant, fully
knowing that our religious practices are separate from the Roman Catholic Church following the principles of the Reformation, including the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches....
I just knew i was in the right place and decided to settle down in Tomahawk,Wisconsin right then and there.
Blessings to all of the Smerz family and those he spiritually touched so profoundly.

Darrell was truly a gift from God to St Mary’s Church and the City of Tomahawk. He was always so pleasant and cheerful and greeted everyone by name. Darrell’s sermons were so down to earth and very uplifting. Whenever you asked him to remember someone in prayer, he always asked the persons name and would pray for that person by name! We are sure glad our paths crossed in this journey of life! God has blessed The Smerz Family! Jim and Pat Brimacombe

Deacon Darrell was one of the first people I met when we moved to Tomahawk. He was then, and continued to be, a wealth of information about the town and the people. A Deacon is ordained for Word, Sacrament, and Service. Over the years, I grew in awe in how Darrell approached the ministry of Service. One could easily say he could write a book. His knowledge of Scripture is something I enjoyed and admired, and I especially liked the way he could take an assigned Scripture and fashion a homily that would give us something to take home with us. Darrell could say the most outrageous things but then you would see the twinkle in his eye and know his heart was filled with love. Millie and I loved each occasion when we came together with Donna and Darrell. They weren’t often enough. Beyond that, my mind dwells on the words of the hymn we’ll sing: “May the Angels lead you into paradise.”

I first met Grandpa Smerz when I was too young to remember but every year and sometimes more, he was always a friendly face to see at the Cottage. Even when it was being told to do the Thanksgiving dishes. Even though he is with us no longer, he was a great man who always wanted to help around and built off of a great foundation for his entire family to enjoy. No matter how much time passes, he will always be remembered in my heart.
Sincerely - Ashton Ford

My daughter Martha was the first baby Darrell baptized in 1991 when he became a Deacon. I would cross paths with Darrell often in the following years. He was the smiling face at church and the comforting word at people's homes where he brought communion. I want to express my sympathy. Heaven has gained an angel.

Our prayers and sympathy to you, Donna and all the Smerz family. Claudia & I were personally blessed by Deacon Darrell and treasured every encounter with him whether at the driveup window for Claudia or the many encounters at St. Mary's for me. Our even greater blessing and support was in the faith we share and the huge support and motivation in the cooperative ministry and collaboration between Grace Lutheran and St. Mary's Catholic that Deacon Darrell encouraged. Deacon Darrell Smerz was a great witness, servant and proclaimer of the good news of Jesus Christ in word and action.

Darrell was a inspiration to me-I was in awe on how he conducted himself and the way he treated the residence at both nursing homes here in Tomahawk. He always made sure that he said Hi to me before Mass or afterwards.
I will surely miss him at Mass,as he always made it special-Walt and Darleen Woiten
