Nelson was my childhood friend. In early 2021, I had the idea to look him up for the first time in years. As you can imagine, it was shocking to then find this obituary. Now, over a year later, he still crosses my mind and his death still stings, so I thought I would write a note to his family.
Nelson was my good friend in first through third grade at Brener, until I moved away from Shawano. He and I later reconnected online as teenagers, even meeting up a couple times when I was in Shawano or when he was in Appleton.
Nelson was very smart, fun, and interesting. While kids at Brener, I have fond memories of chasing him around the snow-covered playground and of sitting next to him in Music class. We would also hang out at birthday parties, joke around in the hallway, and in general be classroom buddies. I remember he *really* wasn’t a Packer fan, and in fact he wore a winter jacket for one of the opposing teams (the Vikings or Lions, I believe). During the late ‘90s in the Green Bay area, it was rather unusual to not be a Packer fan - Brener even had Packer Day on Mondays during football season, where we were supposed to wear Packer clothes. Later, when Nelson and I were teens, he introduced me to the wonderful band Garbage, for which I will be forever grateful. I have become a big fan of founder Butch Vig over the years (even attended a talk with him a few months ago), and I have Nelson to thank for encouraging me to listen to Garbage in high school.
Anyway, I thought I would write this note because when I think of my childhood in Shawano and my time at Brener, I often think of spending time with Nelson. We had some pretty good conversations for being only 6-8 year olds. :) I am very sad that he passed away so young. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I just heard about Nelson’s passing. You have my condolences. I remember Nelson as a middles school student, I was a teacher at SCMS then. I remember him protesting the no pajama pants should be worn to school rule. How? He wore them almost every day to prove he could wear them and yet learn. He had a kind and persistent soul!

Ginny, I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences.
Nelson and I first met on the Sandburg patio when we were 18. Over the years, our friendship grew and we became roommates, twice. Nelson was such a bold and vibrant person, with many passions and was never one to be idle. He was the person that I could unabashedly talk to about anything and was always there when I needed him. He was smart and confident in his beliefs and knowledge and always knew how to make every experience enjoyable, even our dreaded election loss. I loved him. I feel fortunate to have been his friend.

Nelson was a magical friend you meet so few of in life. I met Nelson as my next door neighbor and we vacate close friends fast. I also met Bailey through Nelson who will be another life long friend, regardless of how much time passes.
Nelson quickly became a both a friend that brought out my biggest giggle fits and someone who could hold my deepest secrets without judgement. He affectionately called it his “Disney Vault” and I trusted whatever was put there would stay there and it always did.
I’m still in a state of shock and will never forget Nelson. For those of us who were lucky enough to know him will surely never forget who he was and the pure joy he brought to life.

My family adored Nelson. Through his friendship with my daughter Lucy we were lucky to have him join us for a few Thanksgiving dinners and this last one he spent the night and he and Lucy did some epic duets together. Nelson was a total love and being with him a joyous treat. His passion for food and art and great shoes made for lively discussions. But his heart, his sweet soul and his hilarious wit made him a favorite person to those of us lucky enough to know him. I can’t believe our sweet boy is gone. My heart breaks for his family and his friends and I will cherish the memories of our time together.

Nelson,
There’s so many fragments from the history of our friendship I could cull forth in your tribute, but I’m struggling with how to bind it all together. And you truly were the biggest fan of it, weren’t you? Our history, that is. Or rather, our ‘legacy.’ You understood there was a grandeur hidden within it all. That every thing we did, saw, heard and saidーencapsulated by the place where those things transpiredーwas part of some bizarre continuum/hilarious narrative that we were just lucky enough to be starring in. And you took any chance you got to pluck out a classic one-liner from the canon of our story to remind me of that fact.
I feel extremely grateful I was gifted the opportunity to celebrate our 30th birthday together in NYCーa birthday we share, down to the very date. Your time there was short, but we made sure that what we didーas alwaysーwas noteworthy.
I introduced you to to my favorite pizza place in Manhattan, with which you fell in love.
I also accompanied you to what was supposed to be a nothing-but-Madonna, concert-after-party in Brooklyn. The eventーat a comedy club masquerading as a barーdid not at all meet expectations; but, for that reason precisely, it seemed to fit perfectly as yet another “momentous bust” into our still growing book of stories.
I’d have to say, however, my most cherished memory from then, is of us enjoying a couple of beers togetherーBrooklyn Lagersーat an elegant sportsbar in the city. It was quiet and low keyーrare for the cityーand that's exactly what drew me in, allowing for us to have a real, honest, heart-to-heart talk. I’ll never forget howーhopping off your stool to hit the restroomーyou suddenly stopped and swung around to say “I’m really enjoying thisーit’s some really good conversation.” I felt exactly the same way.
You made one more trip to New York, but due the virus, we did not meet. On the agenda would have been pizza, that bar in Brooklyn, some lagers, and one more thingーa flip-through of our old high school yearbook, which you took care to pack into your suitcase, surely with a rehashing of the iconic one-liners and experiences that came to carry our ‘legacy’ into present day.
I’m really sad that part never made it into our book, but here I come to say... thank you, Nelson, for helping to build, believe in, and praise that legacy, right up until your end. It honestly wouldn’t be what it is without youーbecause to YOU, we owe so much of it, my friend.
Zeke

My deepest sympathy. I'm going to miss Nelson tremendously. I'm crushed and lost.. I can't imagine not speaking anymore. Will miss him asking for home cooked Indian food, which he became amazing at cooking himself. I see his face around the clock and won't stop keeping him in light.
