Obituary of Edna Wittka

Please share a memory of Edna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edna Selma (Steinkusch-Griffin) Wittka, age 91, of Tomahawk passed away peacefully from this life February 6, 2020. Edna was born October 25, 1928 in Milwaukee to German immigrants, Ewald and Elly Steinkusch. Edna was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herbert K. Wittka. She is the loving and devoted mother of Bonnie (Griffin) and Eugene Danielson, and stepdaughter Christine Huber (of Austria). Adored Oma of Traci (Justin) Mitchell, Erik (Shelley) Danielson, Nicole (Jason) Monroe, Stephanie Danielson; and all their children: Harmony, Jadence, Evan, Elly, Madelyn, Falyn, Isla, Griffin, Maxton, Vylinna, Leeland and Ever. On a usual family visit to Germany at age 12, Edna and her parents were unable to return to the US, forced by Nazi rule to stay and work, residing on the outskirts of Berlin. At the age of 17, Edna worked with the US Army, assisting allied troops with German/English translation and providing intelligence to US higher command. Her fearlessness and spirit encouraged her mother, father and other family and friends to persist in the face of danger, overcome unheard of challenges and begin a new life. Edna rarely spoke of her service and never sought out recognition. Saying she was selfless, is an understatement. Edna and her parents eventually made it back to Milwaukee, making Wisconsin their permanent residence. She and one of her closest friends (Margie) worked alongside one another for 30 years as secretaries at a local physician’s office. After retiring, she co-hosted The Continental Showcase with her husband on WTKM. Edna and Herb were also both longtime members of the Mardi Gras Society, Germanfest Milwaukee and Berliner Bären. In 2004 Edna and Herb moved to Tomahawk to stay close to her daughter, Bonnie. Edna loved German music, enjoyed socializing with old friends and treasured her time spent with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edna’s vivacious personality, wit and compassion never faded with time. Her spirit will live on for years to come, with the family she adored and held so close to her heart.
