Marie was a special friend and co-worker at Marathon High School. She would have thoughtful cards and treats in my mailbox at school or at my desk which brightened my day. Later, when she retired, she made me a number of cards for the holidays. I still set them out . She was very creative & talented. She gave me stepping stones when we lost our daughter and my parents. She was also an excellent teacher. She was strict but caring. She spent a lot of time at school with her Home Ec Club at concessions at games. Most of all, she was a caring friend, always willing to listen and calling to see how I was doing. She also had a great sense of humor! I miss her a lot and wish I would have known she passed away. RIP, Marie...you are always in my heart.

I feel like I actually lost two people with Marie's passing, a high school classmate, and more importantly, a cousin. I will always remember Marie as one of the nicest people in our class. I will miss our conversations about family and and other news at class reunions and other meetings. I offer my deepest sympathy to Marie's sisters. It was such a shock to hear of her sudden passing. Rest in peace, Marie.

Marie was a kind, caring person. Always was nice to talk with her about life. She held many respectable qualities and was a wonderful woman to know.

...Thinking of my good friend, Marie...remembering the good times and the adventures with a very talented, fun, kind, and all around special person. Memories that make me smile are ice skating on the Vandervoort ponds, camping at Otter Lake (until dark, when we got scared and piled three people with all the gear into a volkswagen beetle and drove back home thru the woods, and most recently, getting together with the Harrison Babes for food, fun and gossip. RIP my friend, until we meet again.

I had Mrs. Betka when I was in high school. She was just the best and I loved having her as my teacher. She was the first one to ever call me by Franny. I still use her Cherry Nut Bread recipe and a hemming stitch . She will be missed, loved you Mrs. B.

I spent many hours with Mrs Betka and she played a big role in my high school career. She loved her students. So sorry I didn’t get the chance to see her one last time.

Remember her very well, Was our Bachelor living teacher. Loved the class. She always seemed to let us guys get away with a little more. Meaning our project were maybe was not done as nicely as some of the girls and we would get better grades. Have not seen her since graduation. We were on way to work my Wife and I and heard the Obituary on WJJQ. Had no Idea she was from the Tomahawk area. We go to Church out in Harrison quit Frequently. I passed on the Obituary to our Classmates From Marathon High School. Class of 1981 Many nice things said, and Great Memories shared. RIP God Bless Mrs. Betka

Marie was a very wonderful & caring person as so many have expressed. She was always bringing her mother, Helen, to many community activities. I feel that a bit more needs to be expressed about her dedication to her students. Marie was Family & Consumer Education Teacher (not just "home ec") at Marathon High School for 33 years & also assisted with the school lunch program when her teaching position was reduced. I am hopeful that some of her former students will express their thoughts on this tribute wall. She received the Lincoln County Homemakers' scholarship so she could attend UW-Stevens Point & she never forgot this gift as she was always willing to speak about canning, freezing, gardening, etc at local events. She always knew everyone & greeted everyone with a cheerful word. Rest in Peace, Marie.

Marie and I were close friends growing up in Harrison and attending Harrison Grade School. She used to walk up to our house on Sunday just as we finished dinner . . . thereby getting me out of doing dishes, which I loved her for! In the past 6-8 years, each time I was in Wisconsin/Harrison in the summer and after Christmas, Marie, Gen Hoebe Ziert, Cheryl Bishop Hobbs and I would meet for lunch and conversation (and some canasta playing, too). This Christmas Marie could not meet with us as she had a virus/flu. I did get to talk with her, but really missed seeing her. Marie was always a very caring person, and one who was genuinely interested in all whom she met - that being especially so with her students through the years. Marie, I will meet your absence in Harrison this summer - and beyond. Thank you for the life you shared with all of us.

Virginia Meisenheimer:
Marie and I attended grade school at Harrison State Graded School and High School in Tomahawk. She was a kind and gentle person. I know she will be fondly remembered by the many students that she taught. That is a legacy anyone would be proud of.

Marie was such a wonderful classmate at Tomahawk High School and beyond. When we organized a THS62 reunion every five years, Marie was there for us. We did not ever worry about name tags, notices to non-emailers, or typing meal menus because Marie had already thought of those things and did them.
