I was so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. I want to send all of you my condolences and prayers. It has been a long time since we have had a visit when we were neighbors.
I just wanted to let you know that I can feel your hurt as I have lost loved ones also but I have learned to remember all the good times which helps me to smile.
If you ever come back to ND I sure would like to visit with you. I am living in New York Mills, Mn at the present time

Written by Karen Derr
Dear Annette, Rachael, Emily, Erv, and Kathy: I’m trying to find the words to express how broken our hearts are at the loss of Gary, our brother-in-law and uncle. A beautiful life gone too soon.
My first memory of him is when Mom Derr told us, with a wink in her eye, that Annette was getting a ride home from college from a “young man named Gary Miller.” There happens to be a man named Gary Miller who is a neighbor and a local East Bristol farmer, a silly coincidence.
We lost Mom Derr before Annette and Gary were married, they were a beautiful couple.
Then one Easter visit home, Gary and Annette announced that they were expecting more than one baby- twins! What an incredible gift, two girls. I always thought Emily resembled Annette and Rachael looked like Gary when they were growing up. Gary lent us his fishing boat one summer and cooked great burgers too (he was a great cook.) What a handsome, talented young man, and giving in many ways. I was happy for Annette to find such a great guy. And a great dad might I add, to two young girls.
Life can sometimes take some strange turns and make us vulnerable. We can be hopeless to wonder why, only God knows for sure. We have to know he came to Earth to love and to be loved. And that he did love very much. Now he has moved on to a greater existence, and I’m quite sure Mom Derr is guiding him in his new beautiful home.

Around ten years ago, Gary beat the absolute brakes off me in tennis. Just destroyed me. I slouched across the court, tripping over my own feet in a puddle of sweat, panting like a St. Bernard. Meanwhile, he casually sauntered across the asphalt, his artillery-blast serves and pinpoint drop-shots failing to elicit a single bead of sweat on his brow. After it was over, his relentless positivity and general good nature somehow kept me from smashing my racket into splinters.
It's that positivity that I'll remember. Mainly, Gary nodding. He had a specific nod; Like, he'd look at you sidelong as you told him something, and then he'd grin and nod not only with his head, but with his shoulders and his entire body. That grin like you were sharing something only the two of you secretly understood.
Gary's tennis-confidence and invincibility seemed indicative of how he moved though life. When he volunteered with the Tomahawk High School Cross Country team, his attitude was infectious, all the kids spurred on to greater heights by his mere presence. His outward confidence and sense of optimism seemed to make him untouchable. I could just never imagine Gary struggling at something.
I wish I'd pried more. I never saw any of it coming, and I am stunned he's gone. I guess all I ever really saw was my side of the court. Me sweating my ass off, and him just past the net, gliding effortlessly, seemingly untouchable.
Man, I'll miss that full-body nod, that knowing grin. Damn. Rest in peace, Gary.
Deepest condolences to Annette, Rachael, and Emily from the McGovern's. -Michael McGovern

Gary was a quiet, humble and caring person while growing up in Shullsburg. We grew up in the same neighborhood and our Moms were, and still are, very good friends. As a parent myself I can’t even imagine the hurt Erv and Kathy are enduring. To his girls and Annette please remember the good in your Dad and Gary. You might have lost your father and friend but you will have a guardian angel now looking over you the rest of your time on this earth.

Such sad news, I only got to Coach Gary for his Senior year, but what a year he had. Still one of the most versatile best running backs at Shullsburg ever, and a great kid.
In the End Zone one more time,

Such fond memories of camping, vacations and hanging out with Gary, Annette and the girls! Always lots of laughs!
The exploding burn barrel full of leaves will always be our favorite story of Jeff and Gary hanging out in the backyard. Apple picking, river swimming, so man great fun times....he is missed so much.

From my memory, Hank and Florence invited Erv and Kathy to our house and Gary came along. I think we were freshmen in high school. The home made wine came out and the parents allowed us to have some. It was a Sunday night and the ABC Sunday night movie was a James Bond movie. The excitement of the really cool James Bond movie led to probably drinking a bit more wine than we should of on a Sunday night and I remember we were both suffering in Algebra class Monday morning. I also remember riding in that 3 speed car Erv got for Gary that topped out at about 45 miles per hour when you floored it. Our “village” of Shullsburg certainly helped each other with a great influence of the neighbors helping each other out. Erv and Kathy were great influences on all of us who had a chance to hang out with Gary and Kim. From Mike and Julie Tashner
