I have read condolences with stories of our mother's skill at cooking, especially baking and making treats. A story within the family is that she didn't know how to cook, or not very well, when she got married. True or not, she certainly got very good at it; she was voted Homemaker of the Year nine years in a row (of course it helped that the judges were all her children.) We all have our favorites (mine is her carrot cake) and she was particularly good at anything that has apples in it (pies, crisp, squares, rolls), but it seems likely that anyone who knew her probably had her Chocolate Sheet Cake at one time or another - literally a sheet of cake:
2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
Bring to boil and add to dry ingredients:
2 sticks margarine
4 Tbs. cocoa
1 c. water
Stir well and add:
1 t. soda in 1/2 c. buttermilk
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla
Bake in 11"x17" cookie sheet (with lip) 400 degrees, 20 minutes
Frosting:
Boil 1 stick margarine, 4 t. cocoa, 3T milk. Add 3 c. powered sugar, 1 t. vanilla, and nuts if desired. Spread on hot cake.

Jane, David and family: Bill and I offer our sympathy, thoughts and prayers, that you can find, after time, peace and comfort while thinking of the good memories you have of your mom. We both know how difficult it is to lose a mother, and we still shed tears when we find certain pictures or hear a certain phrase, or when we think of the fun times we had with our moms on Mother's Day and their birthdays. Know that you're not alone in these days, but have God's comforting words of eternal life - John 10:27-29 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand." - God bless all of you. Bill and Dianne Gierman

Plain and simple, Grama made life better. She took care of everyone, regardless of how many bodies were wandering around the house. You couldn't pay a visit without getting a hug, and being offered every food and beverage in the house. When I think of Grama I think of her zucchini bread, wrapped in parchment paper, Old Duchess' apples, her Christmas tree lights with the metal flower-like accoutrements reflecting the light, the mints and gum she would give me to keep me quiet in church, her Christmas bell, the camera she was always grabbing to take candids, and the purple dress she bought to wear at my wedding. I also loved to brag about how tall she was. Towards the beginning of our relationship I told my now-husband that she was around 6 feet tall and he didn't believe me. When he met her, he leaned over and whispered in an awestruck voice, "Your grandma is really tall." She was the best grandma anyone could ask for and I feel incredibly fortunate to have so many fond memories of her. I will miss her dearly.

Dear Alan and family,
It is the hardest moment to lose a parent. Alan you will continue her legacy and she will remain very proud of all of you. Continue to hold her memories close to your heart and you will see and feel her droplets of love from heaven.
Heaven gained another angel.

I grew up with many fond visits to our grandparent’s house, which always seemed to begin with cheese, sausage, and crackers. When we were kids it was definitely about the food (after a four-hour car ride...) but as we grew older it was increasingly about the time spent in conversation, catching up, hearing stories, reminiscing... one of my favorite memories of Grandma was how she would always put out scraps for “her deer” and knew their comings and goings. When the barn was still around she knew that we liked cats, so she would send us out to the barn with the cat food plus some extra scraps so we could play with the kitties who were tame enough to come close. As we got older, it was nice to hear about the latest travels and projects... she told me once that she knew how to spin wool, and I always meant to ask if she would teach me someday. Our late night visits often turned to zilch or yatzee, she was a wizard with the dice! Many fond memories, thank you for each one.

I know it says condolences, but I'd rather honor our mother with stories; I think she'd like it if we shared a few stories... So this one is about berry-picking... When we were kids, there were rock piles that ran alongside County T all the way to Hwy 8, and wild raspberries grew among the rocks. Come mid-summer, our mother would give us cups and pails and send us out to the rock piles to pick berries. I'm pretty sure she wanted a little peace and quiet, but there were four rewards that came with picking berries: 1) When we came home she would "oo-and-ah" over all the berries we had picked, which felt like we had accomplished something special; 2) she would often make fresh berry pudding cake, a delicious treat (Umm, might have to make some now!); 3) she would can raspberry jam, a year-round staple on toast and ice cream, and; 4) we - well, some of us - acquired skill in a kind of meditation; picking berries became fairly automatic after a while, which allowed the mind to relax and wander, a pretty handy skill to have still today...

I came home one day from school in Spring 1977, my senior year of high school, and told my mother that a friend and I had visited with the recruiter from the UW-Barron County campus in Rice Lake. She said, "I think that's where you should go," and that was the end of my college search. I went to BC where I was inspired by an extraordinary teacher to become a mathematics teacher, which lead to my lifelong career in teaching. (I didn't realize at the time, that teaching is kind of the family business...) Had I not gone to Barron County, I'm sure I would have flushed out of college; it was the place for me to get the support I needed, and my mother knew it. So, thanks, mama, for the good advice!

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends. God also gives Bible promises to comfort us. . “He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces.” Isaiah 25:8 and “He wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
