Agnes E. Pokela, age 96, formerly of the Tripoli and Brantwood area, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk.

 

Agnes was born October 25, 1921 in Cokato, Minnesota to Mathias and Aili (Luhtala) Hill. She was united in marriage to Carl Pokela on June 15, 1940 in Gary, Indiana. He passed away in 2008.

Agnes was well known for her cooking, especially making Finnish flat bread. She had cooked at Tripoli and Clifford Schools, and clerked at the Brantwood and Clifford Co-ops. She also had worked as a butcher at the Clifford Co-op. Agnes later worked as a secretary at the Phillips Nursing Home retiring in 1981. Agnes and her husband, Carl, were wonderful entertainers in the Finnish community and known for their hospitality. Friend or stranger, a meal was always available in their home. They were members of the Brantwood Co-op Park Association. Carl had served on its Board of Directors with Agnes as his

“secretary”. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother and will be missed by her family.

                                               Wendy (Dennis) Mannering               Tomahawk

                       

She is further survived by 8 grandchildren,(Denice, Dori, Wendy, Dana, Matthew,

 Dennis Jr., Brian, and Robert), 14 great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, one brother, Norman and one sister, Lorraine.

 

A Memorial Service for Agnes Pokela will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Brantwood Cemetery. Krueger Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements. The family would like to thank the staff at Milestone Assisted Living for their care over the past 3 years and her great granddaughter, Erica, who was of great comfort and help to her in her later years.
