I am so deeply saddened by the passing of Joan. She was a remarkable and caring woman. I first met her at Wisconsin Rottweiler Rescue, where I adopted a wonderful dog, named Kane, after losing my Rottie named Billie. Joan picked Kane out for me, or helped me decide. After many years I lost him too, and headed back up to WRR for another dog. Joan was excited, she had 6month old female. It was love at first sight. I took her home too. She sits at my feet, right now, and I have a Pitty I'm resting my elbow on - Joan, you will be so missed. Rottweilers all over will suffer for your passing. You were an amazing woman and you are at peace with all the dogs you've ever known and lost around you. I will miss visiting WRR and seeing you. SMT

I am unable to attend the memorial service but wanted to share my story of knowing Joan.
I worked with Joan in the Work-Study Office in the early 1990s. She was one of the many strong women to influence my early adulthood. She was a very caring individual who had an excellent sense of intuition about people. It's what guided her instincts about helping students. Later, she turned that intuition into a talent for finding homes for dogs. She didn't put up with much and called people out on any b.s. her intuition would clue her in on. She loved good food and friends, especially in combination. She had a special talent for sarcasm and humor that reflected her love of life and down-to-earth nature. I enjoyed her hearty laughter and the sparkle in her eye when she was being devious.

Such a sad time for friends and family. I keep reminding myself that Joan loved life full steam ahead. I feel so fortunate to have had Joan for a sister (in-law). She and Raphael Connemara were the first of the Sweeney's to visit Dennis and me in Seward, Alaska. We loved her energy and sense of humor. She brought the freshest cobs of corn we had ever tasted. She was to attend our wedding in 1992 but volcano Mt. Spurr thought otherwise and Joan ended up with hundreds of beautiful flowers she was bringing us for the wedding. Miss you sister as you joined Dennis in heavenly glory! Judi Sweeney

I was so saddened to read of Joan's passing. We both worked on campus. She had such a passionate love for dogs. I loved hearing her stories and about so many successful adoptions.
When I met her, I had adopted 2 blind beagles who enriched my life for nearly 10 years - they are a little shorter than rotts, she would say.
My heart goes out to her family, friends and those she worked with in helping to find homes for dogs. A dog may be a human's best friend; Joan was certainly dogs' best friend.
Thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in peace, friend. Job well done.

Joan, you have touched and blessed many lives with adding a fur member to families. We have many great memories together when you first took over the Rottweiler Rescue and then added Pit Bulls/Staffordshire Terriers. We gave many dogs a second and even a third chance on getting a forever home. We had many road trips to get these dogs. We definitely had our ups and downs with them. You took in a dog that you were unsure of due to her previous owner, but you trusted me on this one since I did know her. We went to the humane society and picked her up and she was never so happy to see me! It took her awhile to trust you, but after our sit down with her so she would learn to trust you, she became another one of your dogs. I wanted her to be with me, but due to rules when renting, I was not able to and she was "Queen Bee" as you called her of your house. Her and Early (your beloved boy) became fast friends and were the best two ambassadors that we could have for Rotts at that time. They proved many people wrong on the breed. I always loved being around all the dogs and have missed it tremendously. My kids were looking forward to meeting you and seeing what I use to do and what you have accomplished. No one was ever as dedicated as you were to those dogs, especially those breeds. You were the Alpha. I know you will be greatly missed by everyone including the four legged ones. Early and “Queen Bee” will be thrilled to be with you, along with all the others that have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. You were one of the best people I have known and I am forever grateful to call you a friend. Many thoughts and prayers for your family, whom are just as wonderful, in this difficult time.

Remembering Joan Sweeney, Beloved UW Employee of over 40 years
By Will Hoverman
To Joan Sweeney, work study jobs meant a lot more than just a paycheck.
She helped pay for her own education at UW-Madison as a student employee in the Work Study office. And she stayed in the office for more than 40 years, touching generations of students with her advocacy, advice and good humor.
“Joan was passionate and charismatic. She cared deeply about helping students, particularly first generation students and ones from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds,” says Cori Splain, who herself was hired by Joan as a student and now works full-time as business analyst in the Office of Student Financial Aid. “She utilized her commanding presence to advocate for such students on campus whenever possible.”
Sweeney, who retired as the university’s Work Study Coordinator in December, passed away on Sept. 21. She was 59.
She began working full time for the university in 1978. Her primary job duty was to run the off-campus Work Study Program, which coordinates the employment of more than 300 students each year at non-profit organizations in Madison. In addition, she mentored many students, receiving accolades from the Center for Educational Opportunity and the POSSE Program for her impact on students.
Sweeney always had an open-door policy for students looking for advice on work, life and anything in between, Splain says. Through the Office of Student Financial Aid, Joan helped students find employment across campus.
“In the age of email, she believed being able to make a personal connection with a possible employer by delivering your resume in-person could set you apart from the rest. Not only did Joan give this advice to students looking for jobs, she abided by its wisdom,” Splain says.
Beyond being a champion for students, Joan also had a deep love for Rottweilers, she was fostering 30 of them when she passed. She directed the Wisconsin Rottweiler Rescue Association for more than 25 years.

It is with great sadness that I send you my condolences for the loss of Joan. We were one of the fortunate people to adopt a rescue rottweiler thru Joan. Her efforts to save the rotties was simply astounding. She really helped us at a time when we were grieving the loss of our previous rottweiler. We traveled out to Madison from Minnesota to view 4 female rottweilers and were delighted to find Amber Rose, an approximately 8 month old female. She is now the light of our lives 3 years later.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you the family left behind. I know that there is a special place in heaven for Joan after all her heartwarming efforts on behalf of the rottweiler and the people like us who love them.
May she rest in peace now. I believe she has crossed the rainbow bridge and is now rejoicing at the reconnection with all the rotties that she saved and have passed on too.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Joan. We first met at the Badger Kennel Club 11 years ago, where I started in agility, and my passion for training dogs and helping others was fostered by Joan as I assisted her in teaching classes on Wednesday nights those many years ago. Her love for the Rottie was a wonderful thing, and she helped so many lead better and longer lives! She was a great teacher that helped so many people learn better communication between themselves and their dogs. Though as life intervened, I only was able to cross paths with her at the Dog Fair for the last few years. I always enjoyed seeing her, and she will be missed by myself and a great number of others from the dog and dog owner community.
Again, I'm so very sorry for your loss.

My heart goes out Joan's family, friends and all the animals she helped or would have helped in the future. We met her when we applied to adopt a rotti. We could feel the love she felt and gave to the dogs. She said she never took in mixes but she had a rotti/shepherd that just came in that would be a perfect fit, who had a very sad story. A father and son had him since he was a pup. The father died and the 16 year old son had to give him up because the mother who lived elsewhere wouldn't allow him to live with her. I cannot imagine how terrible the boy and the dog felt. Well, we adopted the rotti mix and named him August because of the month we got him. He is now 8 years old. Our son is now 15. Augie is so important to us, so Joan is too. She made her mark in the world.

Joan was my supervisor at the UW-Madison Work Study office during my three and a half years as a student at the UW. From the first day I met Joan I knew that she was going to be someone special in my life. She grew to not only be a wonderful boss for me, but also a mentor, a mother-figure, and most importantly a friend. While she may not be here in person anymore, her positive attitude and unstoppable perseverance will surely live on in each and every person who she knew throughout her life. I will forever miss and love Joan for all of the ways in which she changed my life and the lives of those around her.

I met Joan in 1998 when trying to train my first Rottwelier Sadie due to breakup Sadie stayed with my Ex at the time. So when I contacted her and told her what happened she let be adopt a dog but due to a injury I had to return him. What made it a little easier is he was adopted the day I returned him to the rescue. She told me when your leg heals if you are interested you can volunteer at the rescue and 18 yrs later I am still here enjoying everyday. Joan I wanted to thank you for having faith in me and showing me the ropes on how to run Your rescue it was an honor I will miss you but thanks for the awesome memories the it make things easier Give Brady and Zayre A big hug from me and keep things in check up there like I know you will! I am so sorry to hear that Joan's life has ended so quickly and so early.
I was so very lucky to have met Joan while working at DCHS in Madison.
Her devotion to Rotts and pitbulls was unequaled and other dogs too including my rott/mastiff Duncan. Joan fostered Duncan for me until I could move to a place where I could keep him. She also took care of him many times while I was out of town including when my parents were both in the hospital. I always knew that Joan would give Duncan the very best of care and love when he stayed with her.
I'll admit I regretfully lost touch with Joan ever the last few years due to changing jobs and moving to different cities. I will miss her even more now that she is gone. Her devotion to rotts and pit bulls was unmatched by anyone else I've met in the past 30 years. She gave me knowledge and insight into both these dog breeds that enabled me to save countless dogs when I was the Animal Care Director at DCHS.
The world has suffered a great loss and the Rottweiler and Pitbull World will never be the same.
I truly regret that I am unable to attend Joan's funeral.
Sincerely,
David Madden

I am so saddened by this sudden loss. Joan was a constant at UW Veterinary Care, especially every Monday morning when she was dropping off her rescues to be spayed/neutered. In the 11 years I saw her, the dogs for the most part became more and more "rottie mixes" dont get me wrong, there were pure bred Rotties (sometimes). My point is...Joan just wanted to help ALL fur babies. If she was told....yes, this is a pomeranian, doxy, Rott, pit....she took it in. The hours that wonderful woman put into rescue through many, many years, is incredible...and she ALWAYS had a smile on her face. And she knew the background of every rescue. She is a Saint. No doubt about it. Prayers to all missing her, and to a new beginning for Joan in the next world! She is sailing the universe while having a great game of poker with all of the Rotties that have gone before her! Brings a much better image of the iconic poker dog picture, doesnt it!? RIP Joan and thank you for a spectacular job done. We will miss you.

After a long drive, with an appreciative Rottie in the back, we'd pull up her driveway, to the greeting of her dogs, "Business or pleasure?" Joan and I walked to kindergarten together, went to each other birthday parties and played at each others houses. I have a lot of fond memories of Joan.
I have you all in my thoughts.
